His Life
Research chemist, factory manager, and author of some of the most compelling Holocaust accounts, Primo Michele Levi strived and succeeded in sharing his life with the world via his moving memoirs and assorted works. Avid reader and excellent student, Levi often found himself sharing his story of Auschwitz with fellow victims, scholars, and students alike. Levi was an Italian-Jewish scientist who graduated with Honors in Chemistry from the University of Turin, Italy. With the passion of a true nationalist among the changing times under Fascist law, Levi joined an Italian resistance group. He and his comrades were captured and Levi's time as a prisoner began.
Levi survived his time in Auschwitz, went on to write a few renowned works, and soon after remarried. His wife, Lucia, later gave birth to their daughter. Levi began trading within the family paint business, occasionally also painting! In the latter portion of his life he traveled for work while also being an advocate for victims to speak about the atrocities he had also been a victim of himself.
In November of 1987, Levi was found and pronounced dead at the bottom of his third floor apartments' stairwell. The coroner ruled it a suicide but many hold the controversial belief that it was an accident.
His memoirs, poetry, and autobiographical works continue to be studied extensively. 31.7.1919 - 11.4.1987
